Play Nisyros

NISYRIO and Koncave are pleased to announce that the PLAY program is concluding with the installation
of the playground toy that is installed at the primary school of Nisyros, as well as, the
installation of three small houses for the stray cats in central spots of the island. Both the
playground toy and the houses or the stray cats have been created by recycling 110 kilos
of fishing nets from the island that we collected from the local fishermen. Then, we sent
them out to Blue Cycle in order to produce plastic sheets from them. Combining these
plastic sheets with wood we created new objects designed along with the students of the
primary & mid/high school.

PLAY is a program which referred to the recollection of plastic waste from all Nisyrian
countryside with the participation and help of the residents. Eventually, the gathered
plastic waste was processed in recycling and reusing machines, in laboratories and/or
playful games (for younger children), resulting in the production of a children’s
playground and design houses or stray animals. It is a program aiming directly to children
of 6 up to 18 years old, introducing them to product development through the design
thinking, thus, having an indirect impact on their families and local society in general.
The PLAY program was initiated in June with four weeks of laboratories facilitated
by industrial designer Konstantinos Skopas. NISYRIO is willing to extend and develop more
the PLAY program during 2022. More to be announced soon…
